Alexander received his B.A. from Wesleyan in 1961, his M.A. from Indiana in 1963, and his Ph.D. in 1966, also from Indiana. He joined the faculty of KU in the History Department in 1966 reaching full professor status in 1974. He teaches Russian/Soviet history.
